Its actually very clean. They get fed here so lots of leaves and branches get collected at the end of the day as you can see here - srimaaltravels.com/images/pack…

That is very relieving.  I suppose I have grown quick to panic after learning about other locations.  Thanks. :)

Well this orphanage was started by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation, and all the elephants are taken care of very well.

Yeah, I should have done research before jumping to conclusions after seeing one picture.  I did some reading and apparently it's an outstanding institution.

By the way, I see you have quite a few great photographs!

If only there were materials strong enough to make prosthetics for Elephants....

:iconkaush:
kaush Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2014  Hobbyist Photographer
She used to have a prosthetic limb - may be she out grew it and is waiting for her new one.

:iconluludallasmultipass:
LuluDallasMultipass Featured By Owner Jan 6, 2014
Ah. That may be the case. But I thought the way elephants distributed their weight made it impossible for a full grown elephant to have a prosthetic limb?

:iconkaush:

Yes that would be a normal guess, but I dont think its the case, as you can she she seems to have a spinal deformity from leaning forward a lot.

I noticed. Have you ever seen "BBC Natural World"? There was this episode on Jungle Elephants, and one of these elephants--an elephant calf-- had a severe deformity of the front legs that made her walk like she was constantly sneaking up on something (butt in the air, front legs crouched)....She had a similar back deformity.

You should! It's a good series. But it's been going on for a couple years so you should start with the newer ones.

I'm pretty sure there are materials strong enough.

Just search "prosthetic for elephants" in google images, it's kind of heart warming actually.  :)

Dont worry they take proper care of her.
As you can see she was not able to go to the river with her friends to have a bath so the man is giving her a shower.
